Borena zone was newly emerged from Guji zone at the end of 1994E.C. The newly formed Borena zone comprises 13 district and one town administration namely Yabello, Teltele, Dire, Miyo, Moyale, Arero, Dugda Dawa, Bule-Horaa, Gelana, Abaya, Melka Soda, Dilo, Dhas and Yabello town administration re-organized at district level.
Again the zone has 245 peasants or kebeles association and 19 urban centers including Yabello town zonal capital city.Yabello town is located at distance of 570km from Finfine /Addis Ababa the capital of the country. Borena zone has an area of about 63,939 km2. It is the largest zone next to Bale zone .
The largest area of the zone settled by pastoral agriculturalist and semi-agriculturalist, in the Kola, Woina Dega and Dega area of the zone respectively. Borena zone, more of its areas were settled by pastoralist community which depend on rearing of livestock and the agricultural community in ‘badda’/highland areas depend on farming and mixed forming based on rain feed agricultural. So the expansion of social services, economic activities, modern means of transportation and communication are in their early stage of development.
In organizing this document, the serious problems were the absence of reliable data and up to date data and information. The document being the first of its kind gives a general clue about the zone and accordingly could be used as a bench mark for further study about the zone
